The completed feature film Collar, a true-to-life drama about white-on-black police misconduct in a teen murder and crime investigation directed by UPWIFT member Nan Gill-Wilson, is raising money for finishing funds and a prints and advertising campaign. The deadline to donate is July 3.Collar is about a streetwise detective,Timothy James ‘TJ’ Williams (David Wilson) whose checkered career, family life and long standing friendship with the would-be mayor, police chief Hamilton Markham (Tom Sizemore), spins out of control and teeters on the brink of catastrophe as a result of a bust gone bad. While his life begins to crumble, his fast fading future is bartered for political gain by his former best friend and boss, a mayor with her eye on a Senate seat (Rebecca De Mornay) and an ambitious, activist ‘man-of-the-cloth,’ the Rev. Alonso Sparks (Richard Roundtree). The political machinery, geared to grind up Williams as a bad cop, has a wrench tossed into the works by the detective, who with the help of his partner, Angel Santangelo (Jaime Santana), gets back on the job to reclaim his reputation and his dignity in spite of their worst efforts. On Sunday, March 29th, the Downing Film Center (19 Front Street, Newburgh, NY 12550) will host “Beyond Iconic: Photographer Dennis Stock” at 1PM. The screening will be followed by a live Q&A with filmmaker Hanna Sawka, after which all attendees are invited to the Wherehouse (119 Liberty Street, Newburgh, NY 12550) nearby for an after-party from 3:00-5:00PM. There, all can enjoy a live performance by the film’s composers, Teri Roiger (voice) and John Menegon (bass), who will be joined by musicians Mark Dziuba (guitar) and Dave Berger (drums). This performance will be a unique opportunity to look into the creative process behind the film’s rich jazz score. This locally made film is the only full-length documentary about Dennis Stock, who is now the subject of Anton Corbijn –directed biopic called “LIFE” starring Robert Pattinson as Dennis Stock that will be released this year. The filmmakers of “LIFE” have thanked “Beyond Iconic’s” director Hanna Sawka in their credits for the role her film played in researching the personality of Dennis Stock. About the film: A master class on life, a portrait of a life fully realized: Beyond Iconic introduces Mr. Stock in his own words and through hundreds of his famous photographs, which include images from the Golden Age of Hollywood and Jazz, hippies, the American social landscape, architecture, landscapes and nature. This film is a look at Stock’s brilliant and famous photography, his colorful and adventurous life, and his brassy personality. “Renowned for his classic portraits of Hollywood stars and jazz musicians, Magnum photographer Dennis Stock held strong opinions on what makes a lasting image. Documenting Stock before his death in 2010, Beyond Iconic takes us through his career and reveals how he captured such iconic pictures as James Dean walking through Times Square in the rain. We get privileged access into Stock’s photography workshop as he shares a lifetime of wisdom.” – Thom Powers, for the DOC NYC film festival at New York’s IFC Center, November 2011 Venues: www.downingfilmcenter.com (845-561-3686) www.thewherehouserestaurant.com Composer/mucians: http://www.teriroiger.com/ http://www.johnmenegon.com/ Film website: http://beyondiconic.com To hear an interview with director Hanna Sawka on National Public Radio station WAMC, please click here.
